雪松霖 (Xue Song Lin)

My partner and I designed a full scale teahouse that drew inspiration from local material use and our Chinese and Taiwanese heritages. The design follows the traditional 6x6 form of a Japanese teahouse, and uses the interlocking roof brackets, an example of a Chinese style architecture called Dougong (斗拱) as both a structural and aesthetic element.  The brackets are a culturally significant and structurally sound assemblage of precise joinery, also known as an early example of mortise and tenon joints. Using a combination of hand tools and power tools to construct a structure that uses only locally sourced wood (Douglas Fir, Cedar), the teahouse is completely nailess and glueless, a nod to the structural integrity and qualities of vernacular craftsmanship.
